April 6th, #photoaday

Today’s assignment wasn’t nearly as interesting, or as fun, as yesterday’s. But then again, I don’t normally eat lunch. I’ve gotten into the habit of eating breakfast every day now, and those are usually pretty simple, but filling.

So, I had to think about eating lunch, even though nothing appealed to me at all.

In the end, this is what I had:

Lunch of Noodles

And then, I decided I needed something with a little more flavour – sweet and tart – so I did this:

Fried apples

Yes, my famous fried apples! My DH loves them, even though at first he gave me that “Whatchu talkin’ ‘bout” look when I told him I was gonna fry apples. But then again, he did the same thing when I said I was going to make Monkey Bread to take to Tara’s house for Thanksgiving.

Then, I made them and both he and the kids fell in love with them – especially Sky. He says it’s just not a weekend with me if I don’t fry apples or make Monkey Bread LOL!

I suppose that if I actually measured stuff when I cook I could give you a proper recipe for the fried apples (you can google Monkey Bread and find like a gajillion recipes for that), but I don’t measure, I just throw some sugar and some cinnamon in a Tupperware container big enough to hold however many roughly chopped green apples you want, throw the apples in and shake until all the pieces are coated in the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Melt some butter (I like real butter, not margarine or butter-flavoured spread) in a skillet, dump in the apples & the cinnamon-sugar and fry until tender. The sugar and cinnamon will melt into this ooey-gooey caramel sauce that is fabulous, so don’t freak out about the sticky brown stuff! Just pour it over the apples and you’re done!

And now, back to your regularly scheduled programming!

April 5th #photoadayapril “Tiny”

Today’s assignment was a little difficult for me. I seem to have trained my brain to seek out the HUGE and the COLOURFUL and the OMG WTH IS THAT kind of things around me.

Today was “Tiny.” So, I had to pay attention to the small things around me and that drove me crazy for a little while.

Then, I realised, I’ve recently had an infestation of Gnomes and I couldn’t figure out why. So, as I was outside on the deck trying to find something tiny to photograph, I saw them! And I got them on film, hanging out under our rosemary bush! Who knew they loved rosemary so much?!

Subversive Gnomes

What do you guys think of this photographic journey of mine so far? So far, for me, it’s been fun. I’ve paid more attention to what’s going on around me, to see things I probably would’ve ignored before!

FOOTBALL FROGS!

Mainly because I don’t know what the hell else to call them.  One of my favourite clients asked  me to make her two more Uglee Little Tree Frogs, this time in her favourite football team’s colours.

She had to tell me those colours, since I don’t follow football (the exception being when DH is home on Super Bowl weekend, then I am required to cheer on whichever team he is pulling for. This year it was the Giants). I love HOCKEY!

So, without further ado, here are the first two Football Frogs ever made!

So? What do y’all think? Good mascots or what? Leave me love in the comments!

April 4th #photoadayapril

Today was a strange assignment, I mean, really, who takes pictures of your mail? But then it dawned on me, I don’t really ever look at it. I go through it looking for my name, but that’s it. I rarely look at where, or who it’s coming from.

But I had a package I had to mail out and I didn’t want to wait until our mail lady showed up at 1pm, so I gathered up the mail that had already come to the house and threw it on top of the box. This is the result:

Mail 1

Then, as I was putting all of Danny’s mail back on his desk, I saw this one. I mean, I know he belongs to the Lodge and we talk about it every once in a while, but I guess I never really paid attention to how pretty the script they use is. I know he will be all grumpy bear because I said that, but look at it. It’s pretty and important feeling. It makes me wish I belonged.

April 3rd #photoadayapril

Today’s assignment was “A person who makes you happy.” It was an interesting one, to say the very least.

I spent some time thinking about who all makes me happy and quite frankly, I couldn’t narrow it down to just one. I have friends around me who’ve been there through thick and thin, triumph and tragedy, I have family who care enough to stick around even when I go on my mini-tirades. And they all make me happy, for different reasons. I’ll explain after the picture.

Happy People

From left:

My friend Alecia. She’s a ginger, which means she has no soul, but she’s got a good heart and big dreams and even though she’s a liberal who makes me shake my damned head, life would be kind of boring without her reflecting sunlight all over the place.

That stunning blonde? That’s Tracey. She’s the organizer in our group and she’s the best! She’s the one who introduced me to Danny, she keeps me laughing and scratching my head with her stories from the road, and I am happy to hear from her all the time, even if it’s “WTF am I doing out here with all this insanity.”

Samantha is my Sister From Another Mother. She is fun-sized and bubbly and one of my biggest cheerleaders and best sounding boards. She has the best smile, it can light up an entire building and she is always the one I turn to for a giggle. And she’s also not above stuffing me with valium and champagne when I have complete meltdowns in the fabric store. And I would do all those things for her in a minute, without question.

The chica with the purple in her hair? Yeah, that’s my 22 year old daughter, Bethany. She put those streaks in her hair to match the wedding colours. THAT’S Bethany, always up for an adventure, always ready to try something new. She’s bold and daring and smart and funny. Everything I wanted her to be.

The woman in the red sari, that’s me.

That handsome devil standing next to me? THAT is my DH, Danny. Now he is without a doubt my biggest cheerleader. I drive him crazy, he drives me crazy, but we work well together. He works hard for his family, is one of the best at what he does. He doubts himself a lot, and though I may look at him like he’s nuts, I rarely doubt him. I <3 him!

Super-tall dude is my stepson Skyler. He’s 14, trying to figure out where he fits in the jigsaw puzzle of life. He’s smarter and funnier and more loyal and kind and caring than most people give him credit for and I really do hope he doesn’t become so jaded and caught up in crap that he loses those qualities I love the most about him.

Ah yes, PJ. He is my husband’s best friend since they were little. He’s funny, kind, talented and not big headed at all. He and his uber-gorgeous wife Jill had their first child last year, a little girl. PJ lights up like a beacon when they are around and that is a wonderful thing. Danny would do anything for PJ and I get the feeling that’s something mutual and for that I love PJ.

Then there is Chris. He’s sharp, funny, always up for busting Danny’s balls. But I also know in my heart he loves Danny almost like a brother. And he’s made me laugh every time I’ve seen him.

And finally, that little girl down front? That’s my stepdaughter, Lily. She doesn’t call me her “stepmom” though. She says I’m her “bonus mom” and she’s stuck to her guns on that one and that is a pretty good thing for a 6 year old to do. She and I craft together and do nails together and she lets me count the freckles on her nose.

But then there’s one person missing. My youngest daughter, Arri. She makes me laugh and I miss her terribly. She’s intelligent and bold and daring. She has a passion for racing and when I say passion, I mean an all encompassing adoration for the sport and I am glad she has that in her life. Her discipline, dedication and hard work will take her far and I can hardly wait to see where she goes!

April 2, 2012

Today is all about colour! I love love love colour! ALL THE COLOURS!

So, while I was out buying frog eyes (I’ve had another order come in, this time for Uglee Little Tree Frogs dressed in NY Jets colours. HHHHHMMMMM maybe I should call them Football Frogs, but I digress!) I was looking for colours.

My first obvious thought was YARN! And God knows Hobby Lobby has a LOT of yarn (I’m not a yarn snob y’all) but the colours just weren’t popping for me today.

Then I started paying attention to all these gorgeous azaleas in bloom all over town and decided I needed to take a picture of those. But I didn’t want to weird some poor homeowner out by knocking on their front door saying “Hey, I’m part of a photography project this month and today’s assignment is colour, can I photograph your bushes?” Because I know if someone knocked on our door like that, I’d be all “Huh?”

So, I took pictures of our own azaleas. Which, in reality, are a little scrawny, since they’re under a some kind of tree (I’m thinking cyprus, but I could be wrong, it’s been known to happen)

And here are our scrawny azaleas. Amazing how approaching something like this from a different angle can make them look ginormous and luscious!

And that is the second most exciting thing that has happened to me today. The most exciting was checking the mail box and finding it infested with GNOMES! ROADIE GNOMES!

A cute little Uglee Tree Frog

I made these adorable little guys for Carol, who lives in Nevada and has a thing for frogs!

I just sent her the pics and she says she’s already fallen in love with them and has named the pink one Marnie and the purple one Charlie.

So, without further ado, here are Marnie and Charlie!

Two frogs

#PhotoADay

Told y’all I was gonna do this little exercise in creativity, so, here’s the start of it. Today was pretty simple – “Your Reflection.” I guess you guys needed to see another picture of me, wearing my fave sundress/skirt. Yes it’s ugly (the dress), but it’s comfy & it’s my style, and all I’m doing today is putting frogs together LOL!

PhotoADay, April 1

So stay tuned here! I think it’ll be fun for you guys to see what I see this month!
